Incendiary Bomb Attack at Airline Office in Argentina

Safety & Security Report

Americas - Argentina
August 04 2009

The following OSAC report is based on open source and U.S. Embassy Buenos Aires reporting:

On August 4 at approximately 2:30 a.m., the headquarters of Chilean company LAN Airlines located in the downtown Buenos Aires area (on the corner of Cerrito Avenue and Paraguay Street), was the subject of an incendiary bomb attack.  The incendiary bomb was noted as a small, handmade device possibly containing a chemical residue.

The Argentine Federal Police (PFA) is currently investigating the incident and has started forensic analysis to confirm the device composition.  There are no reports of injuries; however, a door and windows were damaged.  There are reports indicating that a white van was observed in the area and may be linked to the attack and that the owner of another vehicle that was parked in front of the building was arrested.  No one has claimed responsibility as of yet and there are no known motives.

OSAC constituent organizations have not reported injuries related to this incident. To discuss this report, or for other questions regarding operating in Argentina, please contact OSAC’s Regional Coordinator for South America.
